Calling West Lothian Clarion members: Your invite to the Easter Meet

Dear all

As you will know, we are hosting the 116th National Clarion Easter Meet in Stirling this year.

As the name and number suggests, this event has a very long tradition and is the highlight of the Clarion year.

A few club members have been working hard behind the scenes to put on a series of exciting rides and social activities, and I am convinced that this year's meet will be the best yet.

As one of the newest Clarion sections, it is an honour to maintain the Easter Meet tradition and to welcome Clarion members from all over the UK to Scotland for the first time since 1948.

This is a great opportunity to showcase both Scotland and the club. I therefore urge you to come to Stirling and participate in the events, making new friends along the way.

Highlights

Friday 22nd
1. Scottish Welcome and sign on
2. FREE Whisky Tasting
3. FREE Observatory tour
4. FREE live music

Saturday 23rd
1. Hill climb
2. Clarion conference
3. Social ride to the Carron valley
4. Kids grass track races
5. Clarion Ceilidh and buffet

Sunday 24th

There is something to suit everyone, from social rider to racer, and family members and friends are welcome too!

I appreciate that some members will be away because it is the Easter weekend but we have now over 130 members so let’s make West Lothian Clarion the best represented section at the Easter Meet.

I look forward to seeing you in Stirling.

Rad Tour: Snow Forecast

As you are all probably aware, there is heavy snowfall forecast for Saturday and possibly Saturday night as well. Clearly the Rad Tour, which follows minor roads where possible and goes over some high moorland roads, is likely to be affected by this. Cancellation or postponement is an option which the organiser and the club will have to consider.

We will review the situation late tomorrow afternoon and will reach a decision about whether we still plan to proceed which will be posted here, on the WLC Blog by 6pm on Saturday.

Could you please make sure that you check up on this tomorrow evening (12th March)

If we do have to cancel/postpone we would obviously rather do this on Saturday night than Sunday morning, to minimise disruption to participants, but clearly there is a possibility that things could deteriorate on Saturday night and the decision to cancel/postpone could be taken at any point prior to the event start time of 9:30. Obviously a full refund would be given of any entry fees.

So please be sure to check the blog on Saturday night and, whatever you do on a bike this weekend, please take care.

Ride the 2011 RadTour: The Seven Castles of West Lothian

The club's season opener, our spring reliability trial or Rad Tour, will be on Sunday 13th March.
As with last year’s very successful even, starting from Linlithgow, the RadTour will join the dots, passing seven Castles of West Lothian.

The route this year has been slightly amended to avoid causing disruption to the users of Almondell Park and is 104km long. A full route sheet will be posted on the website once a full recce of the route has been completed and copies will be available on the day to registered riders.

http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/Rad-Tour-2011

REGISTRATION:
• Registration is open from 8:45 to 9:15 in the Vennel car park, which is just behind Linlithgow Cross, which itself is fairly obvious on the town’s high street
• Entry is £3 and is open to non-members
• Entrants must be over 15. Entrants aged over 15 and under 18 must be accompanied by a supervising adult and must wear a cycling helmet. All other riders are strongly advised by WLC to wear a cycling helmet.
• A public toilet is open nearby from 9:15 - ask for directions. There is also a 24/7 ‘Superloo’ at the the Water Yett.
• If you can bring home-bakes for the feed-stop to the start of the ride, that would be great. The logistics of the event would make it very hard to return tupperware boxes etc so paper bags or similar might be better.

GROUPS
• Riders will be grouped according to their expected average pace. There are 3 pace categories so you need to decide which one you want to join:
• 12mph: expected time 6hrs 10 mins (includes 45 mins for breaks). Start time: 9:30am. Target finish time: 3:40pm
• 15mph: expected time 5hrs 05 mins (includes 45 mins for breaks). Start time: 9:35am. Target finish time: 2:40pm
• 18mph: expected time 4hrs 25 mins (includes 45 mins for breaks). Start time: 9:40am. Target finish time: 2:05pm
• Groups/categories will be set off together, though they may be broken into subgroups if necessary for the management of the event.
• This is not a race. The aim of the event is to complete the route at a steady pace and as close to the chosen target time as possible; times will not be published. However, you should not take risks to ‘make a time’.
• It is not expected that the all groups that set off will stay together and there are certainly no ‘group leaders’. We would, however, encourage groups to stay together for support and we would encourage all riders, especially the stronger ones within each time class, to work to encourage the cohesion of their groups where possible. Please be patient when getting through the slightly stop/start section at Hopetoun - your 45 mins of breaks include some consideration for this section so please wait for your group to get back together. Many thanks!

SAFETY
• The route is fairly long (over 100km) and tackles some high and exposed roads. You take responsibility for assessing your own fitness to take part and that of your bike, and you should aim to be self-reliant.
• You must obey road traffic law and the Highway Code throughout the event.
• You must read the risk assessment prepared for the event
• The route sheet highlights only a small number of exceptional hazards.
You obviously need to pay attention to all general hazards, instructions on road signage and markings. Pay particular attention to road surfaces; another hard winter has had a damaging effect on a lot of these.
• Show consideration for others on the route especially on the off-road sections where pedestrians are likely to be encountered eg: at Hopetoun Estate.
• There is one short off-road section within Hopetoun Estate. It is rideable for a road bike, with a little care.
• If the conditions on the day are judged unacceptably hazardous (notably heavy ice or snow) the event may be cancelled. Full refunds would be given.

FEED STOP
• The feed stop is a little past half-way, coming down Leyden Road off the Lang Whang and is being hosted by club members Neil and Julie Greer - many thanks to them. Last year’s participants will remember this as a true highlight of the day!
• The location is highlighted by the route sheet but will probably be marked at the roadside on the day as well
• Neil’s house is in a quiet residential area set back from the main road. Please take care to arrive and leave quietly and avoid disturbing Neil’s neighbours.
• Small donations to club funds can be made for the catering provided, on a purely voluntary basis.

BREAKDOWNS
• You should aim to be self-sufficient. You should certainly be carrying enough food, some money and have the tools to repair punctures and minor breakages.
• The route passes close to several train stations that would allow (via Haymarket) a return to the starting point. There are also lots of shops and cafes on or near to the route.
• If all else fails call Rob Hemesley (number to be given out on the day). Rob will have a car available and can arrange recovery, though this should be seen as a last resort. Rob has recently trained as a First Aider and will be carrying some basic tools for running bike repairs and also a basic first aid kit.
• If you ‘bail’ but do not need recovery please let Graham Foster (number to be given out on the day) know, as he will be handling registration on the day.

FINISH
• Congratulations! Register with Graham back at the Vennel car park and that’s you done.
• The ‘finish line’ will open at 1:50 pm and close at 4:15pm.

What is a Reliability Trial?
A Reliability trail is a non competitive event, effectively a formal club run, open to all comers and can provide an excellent introduction to cycling. No Reliability Ride shall be promoted which requires the participants to maintain an average riding speed of more than 18 m.p..h. ‘Average riding speed’ means the average speed when actually riding.

West Lothian Clarion Featured in Cycling Weekly

A couple of weeks ago Chris Sidwells from Cycling Weekly came up to Scotland and spent a day with our club.

We had a mass club run of 40 cyclists riding through the Carron Valley and Chris spent time chatting to members and taking photos for the feature.

We invited Chris to come up to Scotland so that we could promote our Easter Meet which takes place 22nd-25th April, over the Easter weekend in Stirling.

We are really chuffed with the article, it shows off Scotland really well and covers the history behind the National Clarion, also pointing our how easy it is to set up a section.

The 4 page article is on pages 56-59. Cycling Weekly is on sale, every Thursday, in all good newsagents - Hurry while stocks last!

"Boots" to new member David Wards

David Wards

Fourtyone year old, life long cyclist, David Wards joined up last week.

David says "I started competing in the occasional triathlon when I was 18, but always preferred the bike leg and as a result have been riding time trials for nearly 20 years now. I enjoy time trials from the point of view, that although I'll never win, I can challenge myself against my PBs and the guys around my level."

David rides an Airborne Thunderbolt in the Winter and a Kiron Scandium in the summer. For TTs he uses a Dalkiia frame and also owns a Cube MTB for some off road fun.

"I like to try new things to keep cycling fresh, in 2009 I built my first set of wheels from scratch and in 2010 I tried an XC event and did a coupled of training sessions on the track at Manchester. As for 2011, I plan for more TTs and myself and some friends hope to take part in 10 Under the Ben in May."

Welcome to the Clarion David

Stuart Bird

Stuart Bird from Broxburn joined up last year and was brave enough to take part in his first race at the club's hill climb up Kingscavil.

Meet new member Paul Hosie

Paul Hosie

Paul from Armadale joined up last September and was out, regularly, on the Saturday runs before the bad weather came along.

He has sent in this fabulous photo which shows him wearing the Clarion jersey in Las Vegas, lets hope it brought him luck at the card table!

You can get to know your fellow clarion riders buy clicking on the link below and visiting our members' gallery

Graeme joins up

Graeme Horne

Graeme Horne started cycling in the late 70's with the CTC in Edinburgh. He wasn't into competing at first but within the year he had started racing with the Edinburgh Road Club and enjoyed some success as a member of Scottish National BAR team champions at both Schoolboy and junior levels.

As he got older, along came college, cars, girls and drink so the bike was relegated to the garage, although never to far from reach. Greame says "A variety of other hobbies and interests took over for about 20 years while the family grew up,  until I then again joined the CTC for both the cycling and the social activities associated with cycling."

"Having completed a few sportives and Audax events over the past few years and having moved back, due to work, into the Falkirk area, I stumbled upon the West Lothian Clarion. I've been out on several Saturday runs and managed to hang on to the Active group, truth be told when I get home on Saturday lunch time I feel like Tommy Simpson, except I'm calling for someone to 'Help me off the Bike'!"

"My first experience of the Clarion is that they are a great group of people with a good team spirit. I have said that I will never race again 'cos it hurts to much' but there is still a spark in there and I seem to be developing a fettish for Carbon."

"I currently ride a Giant OCR but still haven't got used to this compact frame nonsense, give me an old fashioned diamond framed, safety bicycle any day. The workhorse of the fleet is a Dawes Galaxy touring bike and there is a 30 year old Holdsworth fixie in shed that still sees daylight from time to time. I did have a mid life crisis a few years ago and I purchased a Windcheetah 3 wheeled recumbent!"

"The only thing left to say is 'Please be gentle with me'"

Welcome to the club Graeme

Big group out for first ride of 2011

New year ride 2011

Sixteen riders got together for a short 30 miler to South Queensferry on the 2nd January. The temperature was well below freezing, but that didn't stop the cheery bunch riding East for the scheduled coffee stop under the Forth Railway Bridge.

Andy and Mandy Weaving (who haven't been seen since last Spring) joined the bunch on a their tandem as the group passed through Linlithgow, Winchburgh and Kirkliston.

The previously snow bound riders were pleased to stop for sustenance at the very well appointed Rail Bistro before making the return journey back to Linlithow.

It was good to see such a big group out on a busy cycling day, other riders were waved at through out the trip.

Find out more about our club runs here: http://www.westlothianclarion.co.uk/clubruns.html
